The Summer League Focus show with Gussie Hearty, Robbie Rafferty and Dazer Bond returned to the Wednesday 8pm evening slot. This year we have aired new Spotlight Shows by Orla Crilly (The Sunshine Bar), Dominik Buch (Queen), Cathal McCooey (Creedance Clearwater Revival), Tara Tine (The Cranberries), David Bellew (Moonlight Benjamin and a show about Dundalk Solo Artists), Noel Sharkey (The Breakaways) and Jason Kelly (Charlie Landsborough). Ready Steady…Go! Series 2 produced by Marissa Lucchesi begins on 22nd June. A Weekend News Service would be a great addition to the station service so if you would like to join our news team, please have a chat with Paddy McEneaney and he will show you how to research and record the news, sports and weather. Volunteer Involvement and Training We had the highest attendance (12) at our April Radio Documentary Workshop – Jason Kelly, Brian Bingham, David Bellew, Sean T O’Reilly, Harry Mallon, Michael Dowdall, Brendan Connolly, Eamon O Reilly, Marian Del Duca, Billy Lyons, Tony Moran and David Larkin. The discussion was hosted by Alison Lennon and Alan Byrne. The closing date for the next round for Sound and Vision applications is the 7th of November. Our April Radio Course trainees were Gregor Byatt, Andy McKenna, David Larkin and Orla Crilly. Andy and David are starting their own shows on the 1st and 2nd Saturday of the month at 10.00 pm. 12 people attended the Coffee Evening on Thursday 9th May at 7pm. The next evening will be on Thursday 11th July at 7pm. Please pass on this invite to anyone who would like to join us. The June Radio Course attendees were Kerry Fearon, Cynthia Manda and Eddie Cranney. If you want to brush up on your Sound Desk Skills then we have training on Monday 17th June and Monday 15th July – at 7pm. There were 7 people at the OB Training on Wednesday 22nd May, so we will run another workshop on Wednesday 19th June at 3.00 pm. The Fundraising Committee and friends held a fantastic fundraiser in the Lisdoo just before Christmas and they have booked a date again this year. So between now and then there will be some more fun nights out. The first is the Dundalk FM’s 60’s and 70’s POP MUSIC QUIZ which will be on Friday 19th April in the Lisdoo. All welcome. Great night’s craic guaranteed. All proceeds going to renovate the station. Kudos to Sean Callaghan and Tom Gernon who are the question masters. Please come along and join in. A Radio Documentary Workshop with Alison Lennon and Alan Byrne will be held on Thursday 11th April at the station at 7pm. The closing date for S&V applications is 8th May. Our April Radio Course begins this week and we welcome Andy McKenna, Gregor Byatt, Orla Crilly and David Larkin to the station. Running orders – are important on 2 reasons- we calculate the Irish Music % played each day – it’s 25% at present moving up to 30% when our new Licence comes into force from 1st September. And also for our Voices on Air – our target is 7,200. We need to have running orders to back up our stats. We have two Town Talk OB’s coming up – the first will be in the Crowne Plaza for the Age Friendly Conference on Wednesday 17th April and then a week later on the 24th, we will be in St Gerard’s Hall. The Town Talk programme on Bank Holiday Monday (22nd April), Marissa is putting together a Poetry Special Show. If you would like to record a poem and select a song get in contact with Marissa. Track appears in new box set… A new box set showcasing recordings Captain Beefheart made in the early Seventies is due for release. After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. Sun Zoom Spark: 1970 To 1972 features newly remastered versions of three albums that Beefheart and the Magic Band released during that period – Lick My Decals Off, Baby, The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot – as well as an extra disc of alternate versions. Scroll down to hear a previously unreleased take of the track, “Little Scratch“, which appears on the fourth disc of outtakes. Long-time Magic Band guitarist Moris Tepper, first met Beefheart [aka Don Van Vliet] at the Troubadour in Los Angeles during the Clear Spot tour. He stayed in the band until 1982. Speaking to Uncut, Tepper reveals that aside from the alternative versions that appear on Sun Zoom Spark, there is also a trove of unreleased Beefheart material. “I can name a dozen songs right now that I wanted to record with him but which never got recorded,” says Tepper. “They exist maybe more as poems than as songs. He had music for a song called ‘Your Love Brought Me To Life’, I think it was published in a book in Germany. We had worked on a song called ‘Child Ecologist‘ which was another symphony. He’d done something before I ever met him called ‘Big Sur Suite’ which was an incredibly beautiful piece of music, this huge, thematic, movie kind of theme and gorgeous words. He probably had more unrecorded, undocumented works than recorded works. He’s an artist.
At 9 p.m. on a Friday in February, Watson was standing outside of La Casa, a micro-church and community center — whose main chapel is the size of your parents’ spacious living room — nestled next to a tienda in Washington, D.C.’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood. Inside, a hardcore punk band called Unknown Threat had just taken the stage. Of course, there was no actual stage. There was just the floor where the band set up at one end of the room, and the dozens of fans in attendance who stood everywhere the band wasn’t and this is more or less what punk looks like. Once Unknown Threat hit its stride a few songs into its set, those standing closest to the band churned into motion, ricocheting off of one another and swinging arms wildly, seemingly unconcerned whether friend or foe caught a fist to the face. But to Watson, who has performed in bands and booked shows in D.C. for years, the city’s punk scene, at this moment, feels complacent. He says he has watched the scene he helped build lose urgency, at least at home. Looking at it from the outside, 2015 was a banner year for D.C’s storied punk scene, which first rose to prominence in the early 1980s and has become an on-again, off-again fixture in the local music ecosystem. But at no point since those heady days of Bad Brains and Minor Threat has the local product been so talented, prolific and diverse. After years of being a primarily local concern, D.C. punk matters to the wider underground music world once again. But that’s the rub, Watson says. D.C.’s punk scene broke nationally last year, with multiple bands releasing well-received albums, joining major tours and crossing international borders to play for punk contingencies abroad. More than a half-dozen new wave D.C. hardcore bands released albums or EPs last year, including scene stalwarts Pure Disgust, Red Death and Protester. Those three bands also toured the U.S. at various times, while Protester spent a week in Mexico in December. But while established bands rose in prominence as they performed around the country, some within the scene grew frustrated as momentum and enthusiasm at home lagged. When those established bands played gigs within the city limits, fans oftentimes stood with arms crossed and nodded along — not the ideal reaction to a genre that often inspires a hail of spin-kicks and stage dives from its audience. “We just assumed it’s because everyone is in the same bands. For most people it’s like, if I’ve seen one, I’ve seen it all,” Watson says. “We played lackluster shows, attendance was low. People weren’t having a lot of fun.”

The Wee Binnian Walkers are inviting anyone with an interest in Hillwalking to come along to their annual Festival which is taking place this year on the weekend of Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th September. The Walk H.Q. for Registration is based in the Town Hall, Church Street, Warrenpoint. In addition to three days of walking, this year’s Festival hosts two events. On Friday 22nd Sept which is Culture Night we have an evening with Michael Fewer in the Warrenpoint Town Hall at 20.00. Michael will regale us with stories of his hillwalking exploits throughout Europe. Michael has written and animated numerous books ranging across hillwalking, natural and human history. Admission is free. On Saturday night 23rd Sept we hold a Blister Ball in the Whistledown Hotel in Warrenpoint. This is where the true Social spirit of the Club shines. Make new friends and loosen out those tired muscles. So, shake off the wet rags and put on the glad rags for a two-course dinner and dancing until late. Then up for a walk the next morning! The group established in 1987 bases itself in the heart of wonderful walking country, encompassing the Mournes, Cooley’s and the Ring of Gullion. The group takes its name from one of the smallest peaks in the Mournes, Wee Binnian which shelters on the southern side of Slieve Binnian. The spirit of the Wee Binnian Walkers Club is reflected in the Club motto “The Social Club that Walks” In November 1987, Veronica McCann, who, at the time, was a lifestyle tutor with the “Change of Heart” coronary prevention programme in Newry began with 11 women. The club evolved very gradually and developed a reputation for promoting walking in relation to physical, social, emotional and mental well-being. By 1994 the Club had grown to 60 members and the first Wee Binnian Walking Festival was held; its success established the club firmly on the National hill walking circuit. There are now over 150 members from Dundalk, Drogheda, Newry, Monaghan, Dublin and Belfast and new members are always welcome. Club Walks take place on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month. Four different grades of walk are offered each varying in length, height gain and difficulty. The club has a pool of thirty leaders with both mountain skills and first aid training. Veronica is Honorary President of the Club and 30 years on is still an active hill walker; she is a wonderful example of the benefits of hillwalking and the inspiration behind the club’s longevity. To ensure an enjoyable experience, the Wee Binnian club advise festival attendees to choose a walk matching their mountain walking experience and level of fitness. Weather conditions can change and deteriorate rapidly in the mountains. For this reason, all walkers must have proper hillwalking equipment and clothing e.g. Hiking boots/ hiking shoes (not trainers), rain coat and rain trousers, spare clothing, hat and gloves. Denims must not be worn. A rucksack should be carried containing enough food, water and hot drinks to last throughout a four to five-hour hike. All this will ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience on the hills particularly if the weather takes a nasty turn.
