Sports Academy

Sports Academy is the dedicated weekly sports programme on Dundalk FM 97.7, presented by John Murphy and Gussie Hearty every Saturday at 4pm. As the station’s flagship sports show, it brings together analysis, interviews, and discussion across the full range of local and national sport, with Dundalk FC and the League of Ireland at the heart of what it does.

John Murphy needs little introduction to sports followers in Dundalk. A Dundalk FC legend who played for the club from 1958, won the League of Ireland in 1962 to 1963, and was part of the historic team that beat FC Zurich in the 1963 to 1964 European Cup, John went on to serve as assistant manager at Oriel Park under Jim McLaughlin, helping deliver the League Championship in 1975 to 1976 and the FAI Cup in 1976 to 1977. His voice is now inseparable with the sound of Dundalk FC, whether on Sports Academy or calling the live match action on Oriel Park Live alongside co-commentator Ger Cunningham.

Gussie Hearty is another cornerstone figure in the station’s sports output. A familiar presence across Dundalk FM’s football coverage, Gussie brings his own insight and enthusiasm to Sports Academy each week, and his combination with John Murphy gives the show a natural chemistry built on years of working together at Oriel Park and in the studio. .
