October 2020 Level 3 Precaution and Control Measures We are reducing social contact at the station. The Main Studio can accommodate 1 person at a time instead of 3. A second presenter could contribute from the Production Studio (Evenings & Weekends only). Daytime, Evening and Weekend Self Operated Music Shows can continue as normal or a presenter can send in a pre-record/broadcast live remotely. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD ANYONE ENTER THE STATION IF THEY (OR ANYONE THEY LIVE WITH OR HAVE CLOSE CONTACT WITH) HAVE COLD, COUGH, FLU SYMPTOMS OR ARE WAITING ON RESULTS FOR COVID-19 TEST. WE WILL PUT ON A BACK UP OR ASK ANOTHER PRESENTER TO COVER THE SHOW. Protecting fellow staff and volunteers from Covid-19 March 23rd 2020 Presenters must only use a personal pop shield or bring in a pop sock to cover the mic. There should be no more than one presenter in the studio at any time. Based on what is currently known about the virus, spread from person-to-person happens most frequently among close contacts (within about 6 feet). This type of transmission occurs via respiratory droplets. Current evidence suggests that novel coronavirus may remain viable for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. Cleaning of visibly dirty surfaces followed by disinfection is a best practice measure for prevention of COVID-19 and other viral respiratory illnesses in community settings. Employers, employees and volunteers have duties of care – this means that they need to make sure that no harm is caused to each other or any other person by their actions or omissions. Employees and volunteers should make sure that they do not pose a threat to the health and welfare of others in their workplace. You should not come to the studio if you have, or suspect you have, a contagious illness like coronavirus. At a minimum, employees and volunteers should immediately notify the manager and your GP if they develop symptoms of COVID-19. Your GP will provide guidance on what actions need to be taken. Employees MUST SIGN THE DAILY CLEANING SHEET with your initials and the time of cleaning/disinfectant. Duties for the first employee when opening the offices in the morning. Put on a pair of gloves. Open outside doors and windows to increase air circulation in the area. Wipe down all the door handles, bathroom area, telephones, computer screens, keyboards and mice, sound equipment and studio surfaces with anti bacterial surface wipes. When you remove the gloves, dispose in the bin and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Cleaning refers to the removal of dirt and impurities, including germs, from surfaces. Cleaning alone does not kill germs. But by removing the germs, it decreases their number and therefore any risk of spreading infection. Surfaces should be cleaned using a detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs. But killing germs remaining on a surface after cleaning further reduces any risk of spreading infection. Advice to all Members 10th March 2020 If the station is closed down we will ask presenters to send in a show if they can or else we will play edited backups and work remotely. Introduction The safety and well-being of our members, staff and visitors is very important and we are monitoring advice provided by the Irish authorities – Department of Health, Department of Foreign Affairs and the HSE – regarding Coronavirus/COVID-19. We are adopting a policy of high-compliance and seek to adopt further measures to minimise the risks where it is appropriate to do so. General Instructions. In order to minimise the risk of the spread of COVID-19 at the station, at Outside Broadcast Events, meetings and training, you are asked to do the following: Travel If you or a member of your household is returning from any of the areas identified as high-risk by the HSE or the Department of Foreign Affairs; whether or not symptoms are evident, we request that you do not come into the station. Notification Please contact a member of staff immediately if you believe that a risk of transmission of the virus has arisen for any reason on Dundalk FM premises. Hygiene When at the station, events or meetings, please observe the personal hygiene recommendations. Meticulous hand washing. Covering coughs and sneezes in the correct manner to avoid the spread of infected water-droplets. Safe disposal of used tissues and cleaning of infected surfaces. Wipe the desk faders and desktops – wipes are provided in the studio. Go to https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/coronavirus.html for up-to-date advice, description of symptoms, etc. Cancellations Dundalk FM may cancel live programming at short notice in order to avoid the risk of transmission of the disease. We will broadcast similar programmes where it is possible to do so. Also, please notify us in advance of non-attendance due to COVID-19 concerns so that we can put on alternative programming. To mark World Radio Day, Hugh McKitterick, David Larkin, Gerry Campbell and Pat Byrne from the Dundalk Lion’s Club – At Your Service show (Thursday 8pm – 9pm) spoke to Station Manager Alan Byrne about the meaning of the day. They talked about UNESCO’s message of diversity in the editorial team, news service, programming and operations and how this is something that the station is aware of and is determined to support. A special word of thanks goes to recent radio trainee John Johansson from Sweden who asked his work colleagues to record Happy World Radio Day in their first language. Radio can shape a society’s experience of diversity, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs, viewpoints and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations. Dundalk FM are running two radio courses that aim to bring the people living in our town together to record programmes about our community, health, lifestyle, sports, food, new technology, the environment and music. The Dundalk Lions Club broadcast their weekly news for the visually impaired show live from the Louth County Museum on Thursday 10th October 2019. Pictured above are David Larkin, President Dundalk Lions Club, John Hennessy, Pat Byrne and Gerry Campbell. This is the first time that the radio show Dundalk Lions – At Your Service – has been broadcast live outside the studio by the Lions Club. The team rotates each week and this week’s presenters were Gerry Campbell, David Larkin and John Hennessy. Pat Byrne was the Sound Desk Operator and the Sound Engineer was Alan Byrne with Padraig Quigley back in the studio. The reason for the OB was to promote the launch of Dundalk’s Positive Mental Health Week Annual Art Exhibition and a play by Quintessence Theatre Groups entitled ‘Cracks’. Derek Pepper, Regional Development Officer for the North East Region Shine organised the launch event and was a guest on the show.

Thanks to the presenters for their understanding for programmes that are cancelled due to soccer matches especially Heart of the Matter, Rock Steady Rhythms and An Alternative Ireland. Build up with Bellew is the new pre match show and thanks to Orla Crilly, Ciaran Callan and Neil McArdle (Bratislava) for sending us interviews and for speaking to us live on air. A first for Dundalk FM – we took a live feed from Derry’s Community Radio Station – Drive 105 – for the Derry v Dundalk match from the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on 5th July. For the FAI Cup match on August 23rd we will do the same. Many thanks to Kevin Moore, Dee Curran, Colin Greene and Eddie Seydak from Drive 105 for organising this for us. During the summer time we had OB’s from the Quay Celtic Pitch for the Motor Neuron Disease Fundraiser, we had a wonderful music team at Vantastival and we did our annual OBs from Dundalk Pride and the Rehab Hub Coffee Morning. Welcome back after the summer break to Dundalk Lions Club – at your service, Conversations with Dundalk Toastmasters and the Health and Well Being show. Recently introduced Shows: Saturday Night 80’s (Andy McKenna), Automatic Pilot (International Poetry show with Alan Byrne), Roots and Boots (Kerry Fearon), Saturday Night (David Larkin), Ready, Steady…Go! Series II (Marissa Lucchesi) and ABC of Music with Philip O’Brien. New Spotlight Shows aired were by Sandra de la Cruz (Saber), Anita Guest (One Direction) and Alan Byrne (Buddy Rich). 27 members are taking part in the new Alpha Beats Series I. 1 x presenter – 1 x letter – 1 x hour. The draw for the second series will take place on Friday 25th October during Drive Time. Programme and Technical Meetings are on the first Tuesday at 4.30pm and we welcome new programme proposals which are accompanied by a 5 minute demo. Volunteer Involvement and Training The next Information Evening will be on Thursday 12th September at 7pm. Please pass on this invite to anyone who would like find out how to join us. The closing date for the next round of Sound and Vision is November 8th. There will be a Radio Documentary Workshop on Wednesday 25th September 2019 at 7.15 pm. If you want to brush up on your Sound Desk and Audio Editing Skills then we have training on Monday 30th September and Monday 2nd December at 7pm. There were 5 people at the OB Training on Wednesday 19th June, so we will run another workshop on Wednesday 23rd October at 3.00 pm. This year the Craol Training Féile will take place on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th October in the Springfield Hotel, Leixlip. I will send out a text closer to the time about attendance at the event. Pat Hamilton and Pat Byrne attended a CRAOL QQI CPD Training event in August. Craol are collecting stories that best illustrate the social benefit that community radio stations generate. At Dundalk FM, we have great stories to tell and if you would like to share your story with other Craol stations, please let me know so we can document and record this important piece of modern CR History. We will shortly be rolling out a Department of Justice funded Training Project with the aim of promoting diversity on air and off air. Station News VACANCY – we will be sending out notice for a full time position with the station during the next week. Our Flag Day on August 8th raised €204.00 Thank you to the members who gave their time to collect donations on the streets. Equipment – Louth County Council have awarded the station €1,695 as part of the Community Enhancement Programme. This will go towards IT and Studio Equipment. We are finalising the purchase of new digital broadcast equipment and installation will take place in September/October. We run an Information Evening every 2 months and new trainees complete a 2 Day Radio Course to learn technical, presentation and radio production skills. Alpha Beats Draw 12th July 2019 We asked for twenty six of our community radio broadcasters at the station to put their name into the hat to do a one hour music show. This is a show with a little difference, however, as each presenter will be given one letter of the alphabet and they will be asked to come up with 13 or 14 singers, songs or bands that begins with that letter. 1 Rule: No two songs by the same artist! & you get bonus points for Irish bands and musicians. The Summer League Focus show with Gussie Hearty, Robbie Rafferty and Dazer Bond returned to the Wednesday 8pm evening slot. This year we have aired new Spotlight Shows by Orla Crilly (The Sunshine Bar), Dominik Buch (Queen), Cathal McCooey (Creedance Clearwater Revival), Tara Tine (The Cranberries), David Bellew (Moonlight Benjamin and a show about Dundalk Solo Artists), Noel Sharkey (The Breakaways) and Jason Kelly (Charlie Landsborough). Ready Steady…Go! Series 2 produced by Marissa Lucchesi begins on 22nd June. A Weekend News Service would be a great addition to the station service so if you would like to join our news team, please have a chat with Paddy McEneaney and he will show you how to research and record the news, sports and weather. Volunteer Involvement and Training We had the highest attendance (12) at our April Radio Documentary Workshop – Jason Kelly, Brian Bingham, David Bellew, Sean T O’Reilly, Harry Mallon, Michael Dowdall, Brendan Connolly, Eamon O Reilly, Marian Del Duca, Billy Lyons, Tony Moran and David Larkin. The discussion was hosted by Alison Lennon and Alan Byrne. The closing date for the next round for Sound and Vision applications is the 7th of November. Our April Radio Course trainees were Gregor Byatt, Andy McKenna, David Larkin and Orla Crilly. Andy and David are starting their own shows on the 1st and 2nd Saturday of the month at 10.00 pm. 12 people attended the Coffee Evening on Thursday 9th May at 7pm. The next evening will be on Thursday 11th July at 7pm. Please pass on this invite to anyone who would like to join us. The June Radio Course attendees were Kerry Fearon, Cynthia Manda and Eddie Cranney. If you want to brush up on your Sound Desk Skills then we have training on Monday 17th June and Monday 15th July – at 7pm. There were 7 people at the OB Training on Wednesday 22nd May, so we will run another workshop on Wednesday 19th June at 3.00 pm. Station News Dundalk FM will sign a new 10 year licence in July 2019. This is our third licence – the first was in 2004 (5 years) and the second was in 2009 (10 years). If a song finishes before the news then you can play out the Timed Promos. These are show promos of varying length from 10 seconds to over 60 seconds. You will find this in the Ad Carts Folder. Tip: Rather than fading out at the top of the hour for the news or going into the next programme hour you can fade out your second last song so the last song will finish in time for the news.
