TRIBUTE VANESSA RYAN DUNDALK F.M. The sudden death of our esteemed employee and colleague Vanessa Ryan R.I.P came as a great shock to us all when the news broke on Friday morning last. Vanessa joined Dundalk FM as a volunteer in 2003 and presented a weekly programme entitled ‘Time Detectives’ each Saturday lunchtime at 12pm. Vanessa’s background in Archaeology gave her the opportunity to talk to national and international experts and to educate listeners about the wealth and varied history of North County Louth. Vanessa helped to progress the development of local radio documentaries with two successful BAI Sound and Vision applications – ‘Louthiana’ and ‘Geo-Archaeological – Changing Legends to Facts’. Vanessa joined the station as Advertising Manager in June 2015. With Dundalk F.M she demonstrated a wide range of skills and set targets which will be very difficult to follow. Her excellent written and verbal communication skills , her ability to work independently , her skill at multi-tasking effectively and her pleasant personality made her the ideal “face on the road” for Dundalk F.M. Her ability to communicate effectively with Advertisers saw an increase in Revenue and most of her new business customers continued to advertise with the station. She served diligently as a Member of the Finance Committee on Dundalk F.M. In the office her honesty and integrity in her financial dealings with Dundalk F.M were exceptional and she presented an engaging presence in following up Advertising arrears. Her value as a friend among her colleagues was obvious to all and the staff were heartbroken when they heard of her unexpected passing. Vanessa had also contributed many hours as a researcher for well documented articles from an early age. Her education shone through like a beacon and any project she was associated with was flawless, indeed such was her professionalism and pursuit of excellence that many projects were enhanced greatly by her contributions as a researcher, producer or presenter. She had an excellent rapport with the many constituents served by Dundalk F.M including clients, Directors, Volunteers other staff members and also with all our listeners. Her recent decision to follow in her father’s footsteps in local politics had just been announced recently and no doubt Jim would have been delighted to see Vanessa follow his example and serve her local electorate with the same dedication and passion at all times. While we here in Dundalk F.M will miss her presence terribly her family will have to continue on without that smiling face greeting them on a daily basis. Both her daughters, Isabella and Ayda, her parents Jim and Ann, sister Carol, brothers John and partner Ciara and Stephen and partner Stephanie, husband Florian, mother-in-law Myrian, father-in-law Didier, brother-in-law Stephen, nieces Rosie and Phoebe, aunts, uncles, relatives and friends will find a huge void in their lives following her sudden passing. The Board of Directors, Staff, and Volunteers of Dundalk F.M have lost not only an employee but a valued friend and colleague and all connected with Dundalk FM offer sincere condolences to the family. Vanessa’s influence on broadening the diversity of programming available on Dundalk’s community radio service is treasured. She made her father proud with her knowledge and presentation style when she stood in for him as presenter of Classics Sounds. A local history programme about the townlands of County Louth ‘From the Border to the Boyne’ featured an episode in which Vanessa explained the importance of the Knights Templar. Vanessa will remain part of the fabric of Community Radio in the memories of the many friends she had at the station and through the audio archives of her programmes. May she Rest in Peace. Animal Rescue Louth Animal Rescue Louth is a programme about animal rescue services available in Co Louth and the local Dundalk area. The programme will focus on Holly’s Horse Haven a 24/7 critical care centre with over 10 years experience in the rehabilitation & re-homing of the countless rescues. The centre caters for hundreds of rescue animals from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland each year. In this programme you can hear about the establishment of Holly’s Horse Haven and the care they provide. The programme was recorded on location in Omeath. We also hear from volunteers, how they became involved and the benefits they receive on a social and emotional level from working with rescue animals. We also feature Fiona Squibb, Louth SPCA officer who tells us about a foal ‘April’ that she rescued and the subsequent care and attention that April received at Hollys Horse Haven. This programme was funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland with the Television Licence Fee.
An Appreciation to Tracey from your colleagues at Dundalk FM. Hi Tracey, We will miss your weekly 100% Irish show on Dundalk FM, it encouraged presenters to play some of the artists they heard on your show and your presentation style and the content of the show was as professional as you are likely to hear on any radio station. I hope that you got plenty of satisfaction from the series. It was a great honour for the station and for yourself as a music presenter to win a Craol Achievement Award (one of two you won!) in the words of the judges it was ‘innovative, well produced, stylish and, above all else, 100% Irish!’ I would like to thank you and Tray for the marvelous publicity you brought the guests and by extension to the station. So after all that, I hope you will continue to send in once off festival 100% Irish shows – they are really great shows. You broke a lot of new ground by recording the show at home and emailing it in, sending us the ‘One to Watch’ and the once off Vantastival and Knockanstocken Festival shows. That is in addition to presenting First Cut, hosting the Battle of the Bands in the Imperial Hotel and joining the LIVE CREW at Vantastial 2018. There will always be a slot on Dundalk FM for your next radio idea. Once, again thank you for wonderful Irish music that you have curated for the education of our listeners. Tracey Hanby is one of Ireland’s best known Irish Music promoters. The 100% Irish Show is a National Chart of the top Irish tunes. The judges said the show was ‘innovative, well produced, stylish and, above all else, 100% Irish!’ Tracy chooses an upcoming tune called ‘One to Watch’ which is featured on Dundalk FM each day of the week. Dundalk FM 100% Irish, the National Chart Show is hosted by Tracey Hanby of Gigs Ireland and is on every Wednesday at 9pm and Saturday at 10pm on Dundalk FM or via Tunein App for online listeners. The show has been up & running since 2014 and has a growing listnership tuning in to hear a national chart featuring Irish artists charted using IRMA, ITunes, Spotify, Shazam & other charts programmes. Other songs featured are ‘Gigs Irelands #PlayIrish’, ‘Dundalk FMs Listeners Choice’ & the very popular ‘One to Watch’ which bands have been submitting their new release for consideration by sending an Mp3 to tracey@gigsireland.ie The ‘One to Watch’ closes the show and is featured on other shows throughout the week on Dundalk FM so well worth submitting for. The CMFE was founded to strengthen the participation of the “Third Media Sector” in European discussion and decision-making processes at a moment when freedom of expression and free access to information are increasingly endangered by the consequences of concentration in the media field. The “Third Media Sector” is made up of non profit-making media serving a local community and has as such a clearly distinct identity alongside the national public service sector and private commercial media. The CMFE is a common platform for networks, national federations and projects active within this sector. On the one hand, it enables the participating organisations to bring up their concerns on a European and international level and, on the other hand, it represents a channel through which European institutions can spread information on relevant questions to CMFE participants. The CMFE was founded on 5 November 2004 in Halle (Germany) after a series of European and international conferences held over the last two years which had made clear that there is a lack of information and participation of the Third Media Sector on a European level. As a first step in this direction the CMFE has taken part in the consultation process launched by the Council of Europe for the Ministerial Conference on Mass Media Policy in Kiev on 10–11 March 2005. The proposal of the Community Media Sector was endorsed by over 50 national federations, networks and media initiatives from throughout Europe. www.cmfe.eu
The Dundalk Toastmasters Club was formed in 2005 and chartered in 2006 and meets on the first and third Monday of each month between September and May. Members broadcast their radio show Conversations with Dundalk Toastmasters on the third Saturday of the month at 12pm.
Tune in to listen to the Dundalk Mental Health Programme on the last Thursday of the month at 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm hosted by Derek Pepper.
Dundalk FM wishes to submit an application to host the National Community Radio Day on Friday 18th June 2021. There is some information about last year’s event which was hosted by Phoenix FM in Blanchardstown on this link to the Craol website https://craol.ie/events/ The Programme and Technical Committee has put some ideas together and this is what we have come up with so far: Dedicated programming from 10 pm – 4 pm with an NCRD First Cut Special from 6 pm– 7 pm and 1-hour shows outside these times, although from 7 pm we have the Build Up and Match Commentary. Each hour will be hosted by one or two volunteers. We could possibly use youtube/OBS to Livestream some parts of the day. We are asking our presenters for 3 things: 1 Suggestions for 15-minute featurettes during the day. 2.Presenters to volunteer to host/co-host 1 x hour during the day. 3. Volunteers to help to produce one of the featurettes listed below – this would mean pre-recording interviews with Community Radio presenters on Zoom or Cleanfeed. We will ask Craol Stations to pre-record some inserts for the day, for example: A Good Luck message. Craol Awareness raising promos about the CR movement in Ireland with a diversity of accents and in different languages. Each station could do a 3 minutes – 5 minutes slot about their station when it was set up, how many people are involved, about their locality, followed by a local singer/band. Station Challenge – which station can do the most ‘Keepie Uppies’ in 60 seconds with a specially commissioned NCRD ’21 Craol Football 🙂 Each station could do a slot about a community group that makes a show e.g. sports, community group e.g. HOTM, Toastmasters, Then between the hours of 10.00 am and 4.00 pm, the hosts/co-hosts would introduce one of the 15 minute pre-recorded features during each half-hour.
