Meet our new volunteers! Kevin Larney studied electronic engineering and took part in Dublin City University FM when he was there as a student. Paul Donnelly has experience with Ballinasloe Community Radio and Flirt FM, the student radio in Galway. As Paul is new to the town he is interested in recording voxpops to get to know local people. Martin Trodden is experienced in radio broadcasting, knowledgeable about radio studio software and has a long history in presenting programmes. He can record shows at home and came in with a demo CD. Brian Cavanagh says he would like to find out more about IT and communications technology and is fascinated by the town’s legacy of the Great Northern Railway. The evening was hosted by Station Manager Alan Byrne. Evening Duty Manager Paul O’Neill recorded the Community Notices in the Production Studio. Each of the volunteers talked about a band they will research for a Spotlight show. Paul, Brian, Martin and Kevin discussed the opportunities that community radio can provide especially in relation to recording radio documentaries. We will be running a Documentary Making Evening in April. Before they left, our new volunteers recorded a Community Notice which we have included in our daily programming. This is National Volunteer Week and as a community and voluntary organisation Dundalk FM would like to send their support and well wishes to all the volunteers in Dundalk and surrounding areas that give up their time to give something back to the community. In Ireland, each week there are over 2,000 volunteer broadcasters on 43 community radio stations. You can find about the community radio movement in the country by logging on to craol.ie that’s the Community Radio Forum of Ireland which was set up to promote the non profit radio sector and lobby for more community radio stations in the country. All these stations are run and owned by their local community – for their local community. Here at Dundalk FM, we would like to hear from Community Groups whose members would like to apply to do their own weekly or monthly show. If there is a Community Event taking place this summer let us know so we can publicise it on our Community Notice Board for FREE and with your help we can do a LIVE Outside Broadcast. We have ongoing vacancies as researchers, presenters, producers and sound desk operators and full training is provided. Our annual membership fee is €30.
