John Murphy / Presenter
John Murphy is a living piece of Dundalk football history, and his voice on Dundalk FM 97.7 is as much a part of match nights at Oriel Park as the floodlights and the roar of the crowd.
John signed for Dundalk FC in 1958 and went on to become one of the club’s most decorated and beloved players. As captain, he lifted the League of Ireland Championship in the 1962-63 season, part of a defence with Patsy McKeown and Timmy Lyons that was described as invincible. That same season Dundalk won the Top Four Cup, the Presidents Cup, and became the first Irish club to win an away match in European competition, beating FC Zurich of Switzerland in the European Cup. John won eight Irish amateur international caps, including all four qualifying games for the 1960 Olympic Games.
After his playing career, he served as assistant manager at Oriel Park for four seasons under John Smith and then under Jim McLaughlin, including the 1976 Championship and the 1977 FAI Cup final victories. He later managed Monaghan United in their first League of Ireland season.
When he came to Dundalk FM, he brought all of that history with him. He has been the voice of Oriel Park Live since the station began covering Dundalk FC matches, commentating alongside Ger Cunningham with Gussie Hearty on sound. His broadcasts reach a worldwide audience of Dundalk supporters tuning in from New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and across Europe. He also presents Sports Academy every Saturday.
