Dundalk FM are running free radio classes on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th June from 7.00 pm on both nights. We would especially like to talk to prospective radio reporters from Blackrock, Haggardstown, Knockbridge, Kilkerly, Kilcurry, Ravensdale and Lordship areas. Presenters Caoimhe O’ Malley and Marissa Lucchesi from the morning Current Affairs TownTalk show will be the facilitators. No need to book a place, just call in. New radio show ideas welcome.
It’s a proud day for 100% Irish Radio and The Creative Flow – both winners for Dundalk FM at the Craol Achievement Awards held in the Regency Hotel on 28th May. Tracey Hanby is one of Ireland’s best known Irish Music promoters. The 100% Irish Show is a National Chart of the top Irish tunes. The judges said the show was ‘innovative, well produced, stylish and, above all else, 100% Irish!’ Tracy chooses an upcoming tune called ‘One to Watch’ which is featured on Dundalk FM each day of the week. You can tune in each Tuesday at 8pm to Tracey. Jacinta Matthews is the producer and presenter of The Creative Flow which highlights local and national writers, poets and short story writers. Jacinta also has set up a vibrant Book Club as part of the show. The judges commented on the Creative Flow as being ‘a great platform for creative writers, a very engaging programme with lots of local voices’. You can listen in at 7pm on the first Wednesday of the month or email jacinta@dundalkfm.ie if you would like to take part.

Follow all local businesses and Dundalk FM shows. Avoid Big News media and companies. Use fb and twitter to get guests. Tweet guests before and after (use pictures and photos). @Joe Bloggs will be in at 11am to talk about #hisbag. Don’t just share a fb post – make an effort! Use & instead of ‘and’. Don’t post anything with grammatical errors – use full stops, commas and capital letters if appropriate. Put news on your website and link from twitter. For larger events target people with fb ads. Programmers should let the station if they have social media for a show. Want to improve your Social Media skills? Tony Martin was Eileen Corcoran’s guest on the Arts and Culture Show on Saturday 11th July 2015. Tony shared his knowledge about Eoin O’Duffy and the 700 Irish Blue-shirts who went to support General Franco as part of the International Brigade in 1936. Tony talks about people local to Dundalk who joined O’Duffy including Charlie Donnolly who arrived in Spain on the 7th January 1937. Charlie was a poet, a philosopher and a soldier from Dungannon and Dundalk. 7 people went out 6 died. Expressing Yourself Through Media (FETAC Level 3 Media Expression 3N0792) €169 (€50 for Students, Social Welfare and Over 65’s) Course Description – Overview This course aims to empower and enthuse learners to express themselves through broadcast media, including a practical introduction to the use of radio as a medium for expression and the importance of active engagement with media. Learners will be able to: identify the various media outlets available to them and the barriers to media expression understand the various techniques and production approaches that are used by the media use recording and IT equipment for media expression work in teams to prepare and record a short radio programme explore how audiences are targeted and use media Course Content/Specific Outcomes: Learners will be able to : Identify a limited range of programme formats and production features Identify the audience segments targeted by familiar television or radio programmes to include differentiation by age and gender Describe alternative production elements, to include storyboards, programme running orders, voice-overs or presentation links, for familiar television or radio programmes Use a limited range of technical language appropriate to recording for radio or television production Use storyboards or programme running orders to describe short sequences or programme structures Prepare a short programme for radio or television, to include developing a production plan, identifying team members and roles, preparing storyboards or programme running orders and scripts. Use recording equipment correctly to make a short programme. Examine familiar television or radio programmes to include production methods and alternative ways of approaching their production Apply appropriate health, safety and personal hygiene procedures in television or radio production. Demonstrate the application of communications, team working and quality awareness in a television or radio production environment. Duration, Time & Venue of the Course: The course consists of 31 hours class contact time. The emphasis throughout is on practical skills for media expression, with participants producing a number of pieces that reflect their learning during class time. Start Date: Saturday 16 May for 3 Saturdays. 9.30am – 4.00pm Venue: Dundalk FM, Partnership Court Pre-Requisites: This course is open to anybody, no specific prior knowledge is required. It is particularly suited to community radio contributors, Transition year students, or members of community groups. It is also suited to those considering volunteering with Community Radio stations, those who wish to build their confidence in communicating, and those wishing to gain a basic understanding of how the media production process works. How is the Course Assessed? The course is assessed by Portfolio. This Portfolio, containing 5 pieces of work (as outlined in the assessment brief above) carried out during the course. Award: This course is a nationally accredited course leading to a QQI Level 3 Media Expression (Minor Award) on the National Framework of Qualifications. Course Progression: Following on from completion of the Level 3 in Media Expression learners may wish to complete the FETAC Level 4 in Community Radio and/or the Craol Short Course in Media Literacy. The Oran Foundation was established in 2015 with the aim of fundraising for Oran and children with multiple and complex disabilities. Oran was born in 2011 with multiple disabilities, complex medical needs and an uncertain future. During difficulties and setbacks his will and spirit shine through. He has exceeded expectations and has a smile and laugh that uplifts all those around him. Oran has limitations but can continue to thrive and enjoy life with a little help from you. The primary aim of the charity is to raise funds to purchase a modified vehicle which will be adapted to enable Oran to be transported to his school and his many hospital appointments. We also want to assist the many organisations and charities who support Oran such as Suzanne House, Laura Lynn, Jack and Jill and Child Vision. Listen to an interview with winner of the Voice of Ireland Brendan McCahey, who was in studio before Easter to play a few tunes from his new album ‘To where I begin’. Brendan sang ‘On and On’. and a cover of the Monkees’ I’m a Believer’. Brendan talks ‘making those connections’ and using the platform of winning The Voice. He talks about meeting John Cleese, recording with Don Mescal and writing with Grammy nominated song writer John Peppard. There is a special thank you to Derek Turner and Mark Dearey from the Spirit Store who have been supporting him for 20 years. Brendan is in the middle of writing songs for his new his new album which will be recorded in July and will be released in September. On Thursday 2nd April 2015 the Dundalk Lion’s in association with Dundalk FM ran a coffee morning. We received 120 mobile phones and some people left in a donation. Thanks to the Home Bakery for the fantastic buns and cakes, we would also like to thank Marion and all the staff of the Community Offices, for keeping us supplied with coffee and tea. If you still would like to donate your old mobile phones to this great cause, you can leave them into Dundalk FM studio.
