The Irish showband era peaked in the 1960s, when up to 800 full and part-time bands were travelling the length and breadth of Ireland, playing ballrooms, dance halls, and marquees to crowds that sometimes exceeded 1,500 people. These bands played everything from rock and roll and country to Céilí and big band, fronted by charismatic singers who became household names. Dickie Rock, Joe Dolan, Brendan Bowyer, and the Capitol Showband were among the legends of the era, names that still carry enormous affection for anyone who lived through those years.
Dundalk had its own proud place in showband history. The Adelphi Ballroom on the town’s main street was one of the great venues of the era, attracting not just Irish acts but international stars including Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison.
