To mark World Radio Day, Hugh McKitterick, David Larkin, Gerry Campbell and Pat Byrne from the Dundalk Lion’s Club – At Your Service show (Thursday 8pm – 9pm) spoke to Station Manager Alan Byrne about the meaning of the day. They talked about UNESCO’s message of diversity in the editorial team, news service, programming and operations and how this is something that the station is aware of and is determined to support. A special word of thanks goes to recent radio trainee John Johansson from Sweden who asked his work colleagues to record Happy World Radio Day in their first language. On World Radio Day 2020 (WRD 2020), UNESCO calls on radio stations to uphold diversity, both in their newsroom and on the airwaves. Radio is a powerful medium for celebrating humanity in all its diversity and constitutes a platform for democratic discourse. At the global level, radio remains the most widely consumed medium. This unique ability to reach out to the widest audience means radio can shape a society’s experience of diversity, stand as an arena for all voices to speak out, be represented and heard. Radio stations should serve diverse communities, offering a wide variety of programs, viewpoints and content, and reflect the diversity of audiences in their organizations and operations. Dundalk FM are running two radio courses that aim to bring the people living in our town together to record programmes about our community, health, lifestyle, sports, food, new technology, the environment and music. Your contribution will pay for new equipment for Dundalk’s community radio studio and on location broadcasting service. The equipment list is two digital sounds desks – one for the main studio and one for the production studio 5 x sound processing and studio PC’s 6 x Mic Arms a studio digital link for outside broadcasts a portable outside broadcast sound desk two OB headsets a studio clock In October we secured 75% funding from Louth Leader Partnership and to purchase this amazing equipment we need to raise €5,681.00 on our own and hope to achieve this before December 31st 2018. Having brand new studio equipment will be a wonderful way to begin our 10-year licence in 2019. One out of every 250 people in Dundalk have been part of making radio since we started in 2002. This is a great opportunity for us to invest in for the next 15 years. It will be of enormous benefit for our community radio volunteers of all ages and especially for live match commentaries OB’s from community halls and events studio panel discussions providing certified radio training courses and summer camps recording radio documentaries and radio dramas In addition to continuing the wonderful rage of programming you hear the new studio equipment will bring Dundalk’s non-profit public service station up to national broadcast standard. This is a series of two programmes about the life and accomplishments of the late Harold O’Sullivan as both a trade unionist and a historian. Much of the detail and nuance of Louth’s history might have remained both unknown and irretrievable without his decades of research. Harold O’Sullivan pursued a love of his local and national history after his trade union career. He received his PhD by completing an extensive history of the Trevor family of Rostrevor. He would go on to write an extensive medieval history of Louth, making accessible a vast amount of information that was previously buried. Having been in his 60’s when he completed a Masters in Literature and a Ph.D Harold seems to have disregarded age as any barrier to his literary career. After completing both the Masters and Ph.D, he published five books and two theses, becoming in the process the most authoritative source on local history in the Dundalk area. His work as a historian brought forward a frustration in him that a town like Dundalk which is steeped in such fascinating history, literary evidence of which is available as far back as the 12th century.
